About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

If you have a sunny, moist piece of lawn you would like to convert into a native plant meadow, this is the workshop for you. The right spot for this meadow could be slightly concave, or it could be a flat spot at the bottom of a slope. It shouldn't be consistently wet - just a little wetter than other parts of your property. The plants you will receive are grasses and wildflowers native to Westchester County and its surrounding areas. They like some extra moisture, but can handle an occasional dry spell too. Some of them - like Joe-pye weed and New York ironweed - are imposing wildflowers that reach over 5' when they bloom. Others - like wild strawberry and wild geranium - are ground-huggers that will fill in the spaces around the taller ones. This meadow will bring bees, birds and butterflies to your yard.

Participants are invited to a Zoom meeting on Sunday, May 4th (2:00-2:40 P.M.) to view a slideshow of the plants and the planting plan, and learn about site preparation. For those unable to attend the Zoom, the slideshow will be available for independent viewing. The on-site workshop will take place at 456 Croton Ave in Cortlandt Manor on Sunday, June 29th at 11:00am. At this time participants will receive and transplant into trays the seedlings that will populate their meadows. The recommended time frame after that is to maintain the seedlings in their trays until September, and plant them in the ground once the weather has begun to cool off.
