We invite you to join George Washington’s Institute of Public Policy (“GWIPP”) and the Roosevelt Institute on November 13, 2018, to hear a range of experts explore the declining state of competition in high-tech industries such as social media, Internet search, and e-commerce, and propose ways to restore it. Amid concerns about the effects of corporate influence on much of our recent antitrust debate, this event provides an opportunity for scholars to debate the most pressing antitrust issues of our time - the role of Big Tech in our lives and in our economy — and offer specific solutions.

The event will kick off with an interview of Jonathan Tepper, who along with Denise Hearn, just published a new book titled The Myth of Capitalism: Monopolies and the Death of Competition (Wiley 2018). Jonathan will be interviewed by CNN’s economy reporter Lydia DePillis.

Following the interview, three expert panels will convene to discuss the best way forward to reinvigorate competition along the edges of the dominant Internet platforms Google, Amazon, and Facebook. Is antitrust enforcement up to the task? Or does the consumer welfare standard that undergirds antitrust law need to be changed? If not via antitrust, can Congress intervene in other ways to promote innovation and enhance competition?

The panels will feature Sally Hubbard, former Assistant AG in the Antitrust Bureau of the Office of the New York State AG and now reporter on tech platforms and competition at the Capitol Forum; Jason Kint, CEO of Digital Content Next; Stacy Mitchell, Co-Director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and author of Big-Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight for America’s Independent Businesses (Beacon Press, 2006); Frank Pasquale, Professor of Law at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, and author of The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms That Control Money and Information (Harvard University Press, 2015); Hal Singer, Managing Director at Econ One Research, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, and Senior Fellow at GWIPP; Marshall Steinbaum, Research Director and Fellow at The Roosevelt Institute; and Sandeep Vaheesan, Policy Counsel at Open Markets Institute; Gene Kimmelman, President and CEO of Public Knowledge.
