About this event

Join us and immerse yourself in Kyoto’s rich history of craft, led by hosts Toru Tsuji from Kanaami Tsuji and Takahiro Yagi from Kaikado.

Two of Kyoto’s most iconic makers—Kanaami Tsuji (metal weaving) and Kaikado (tinplate tea caddies)—discuss the evolution of Japanese craft.

They’ll share their perspective on craftsmanship, while sharing the work of their products.

Participants will go home with a hand-carved Kaikaido tea scooper and Tsuji’s muddler.

This workshop is part of the Craft From Kyoto showcase, where we’ve invited a group of skilled makers all the way from Kyoto to share their craft with us in San Francisco.

Meet the Makers

Kaikado has been crafting durable, hand-made tinplate tea caddies (known as chazutsu) and other goods since 1875. They continue to use molds and dies from the company’s earliest days, and the manufacturing of a single caddy requires more than one hundred steps.

Kanaami Tsuji specializes in metal knitting (kanaami), an ancient art form that emerged during Japan’s Heian period (794-1192). Their range of products include hand-woven ceramic grills, tofu servers, and tea infusers, and each intricate piece is meticulously crafted by hand.
