Want to learn more about crabbing in Washington State? Need advice on how to set up your gear to catch more crab and prevent the loss of your crab pots? Join us for a FREE in-person Crabbing 101 workshop with opportunities to ask all your crabbing related questions!Wednesday, June 26 | 6-8pm | WSU Classroom (97 Oak Bay Rd, Port Hadlock) At the workshop, we'll hear from state, tribal, and recreational crabbing experts who will cover:<ul><li>Washington State crabbing regulations</li><li>Tribal crab fisheries and co-management</li><li>Crabbing tips, tricks, and best practices</li><li>Demonstrations of proper crab pot rigging</li></ul> The Salish Sea stretches for 6,535 square miles and is home to an abundance of marine life, including the iconic and beloved Dungeness Crab. Every year, an estimated 12,000 crab pots are lost in the Salish Sea, and continue to capture crab with no one to harvest them. This leads to the mortality of nearly 180,000 Dungeness crab each year. The causes of crab pot loss are often avoidable and a direct result of user error.The <a href="https://nwstraitsfoundation.org/" title="https://nwstraitsfoundation.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Northwest Straits Foundation</a> is working with the <a href="https://www.jeffersonmrc.org/" title="https://www.jeffersonmrc.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee</a> to promote the idea of "<a href="http://catchmorecrab.org/" title="http://catchmorecrab.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Catch More Crab</a>," a unifying slogan that brings people from all walks of life together to improve crabbing practices and clean up our local marine habitate so it continues to flourish with droves of Dungeness and red rock crabs for generations to come.
