EVENT DETAILS

Ever wanted to write your own song? Join indie-rock front person and composer, JL Marlor for an interactive hands-on workshop that will have you composing, writing, and performing your own original song. Designed for people ages 7 and up (including adults!) No instrument skills necessary, but bring an instrument if you play one. For those who do not want to play, we encourage bringing a laptop or tablet to begin making and exploring sounds. JL Marlor will be joined by Kasey Blezinger to flesh out any of your songs with guitar and percussion.

JL “Jess” Marlor (she/they) is a composer, electric guitarist, songwriter, and educator in Brooklyn. JL is a fellow with American Opera Projects’ Composers and the Voice program and Washington National Opera/The Kennedy Center’s American Opera Initiative with a premiere in 2025. In 2021, National Sawdust named JL a Toulmin Creator for her work with young women at  El Puente – a grassroots youth-led community committed to justice and activism – in songwriting as a pathway to women's empowerment and activism. Beyond her work as a composer, JL fronts her indie rock band Tenderheart Bitches, hailed as “arriving on the indie rock scene with something serious to say” by The Wild Honeypie, and listed in Them’s 2021 list of best new songs by queer artists. JL is a passionate educator teaching composition with the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers Program and was a co-creator in ACO’s genre-defying education initiative, Sonic Spark Lab
