About this event

  • 4 hours

Sudden cardiac arrest claims one life every two minutes, taking more than 350,000 lives a year. So why not learn the latest guidelines and update for CPR?

Penfield Ambulance's goal is to get as many community members involved in learning CPR to help in the aid of sudden cardiac arrest and reduce the number of lives lost. For every minute without CPR, survival from witnessed sudden cardiac arrest decreases by 7–10% thus why learning CPR is so important.

This course reflects science and education from the Latest Guidelines updates for CPR. It teaches single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application for lay-person, prehospital care, and in-facility environments, focusing on high-quality CPR and team dynamics. This class will meet pre-requisite requirements for general job requirements, OSHA, healthcare providers, and USCG.

The course is designed for anyone who would like to be able to make a difference in a time of need. No medical training is necessary. Participants will learn how to perform CPR, How to relieve choking, and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely, timely, and effectively.

Objectives:

  • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
  • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult and child
  • Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult and child
  • Describe when and how to help a choking adult or child
  • The training reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines.

In the Instructor-led course, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. BLS and professional rescuers will also complete an open-book written exam.

This course is also offered in hybrid form and should contact the training coordinator for more information. For questions, contact Dustin Mandell at chiefparamedic@penfieldambulance.org or 585-872-6060 Ext. 8
