NYC Commission on Racial Equity

Join us for a virtual session to learn all about the NYC Commission on Racial Equity's (CORE) history, current work and next steps.

NYC CORE is gearing up to host a virtual August information session to address solidarity economies. Together, NYC CORE, along with co-sponsoring community organizations, NYC Fair Trade Coalition, NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives (NYCNOWC), International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), and Community Worker Ownership Project (CWOP), will host a space for learning, curiosity, and shared visions on the importance of solidarity economies.Each collective will offer a share back on each organization's current priorities, allowing audience members to learn about solidarity economies, their historical significance, the relationship between cooperatives and solidarity economies, and how these economic models can advance racial equity across New York City.According to community feedback, 68% of New Yorkers identified Community Equity Priority (CEP) 13 as the most important need in their communities, emphasizing increased access to and lower costs for essential needs such as quality food, transportation, healthcare, and housing as the most immediate need.What is a solidarity economy? Solidarity economies are rooted in principles of community organizing, collective care, and economic democracy. They acknowledge the lasting impacts of structural racism and the exploitation of racialized labor while recognizing that working-class Black, Brown, and immigrant communities have long been at the forefront of labor organizing and cooperative economic practices. As a grassroots approach to economic development, solidarity economies seek to close racial and economic disparities by expanding community ownership and increasing access to essential resources, including housing, food, and job opportunities.Participants can also share their perspectives on how New York City can help shape the future of solidarity economies to address systemic racism and social inequities.
