Music at Westwood is a program of sacred concert music that has been in existence at Westwood Presbyterian Church since 1997. It strives to present both old and new classical works in a setting that brings one closer to God through sharing the joy of music. Westwood Presbyterian Church’s Music at Westwood has announced their spring concert, Copland, Rutter, Williams!, which will take place on Sunday, March 17th at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature music by John Rutter, Aaron Copland and legendary film composer John Williams. Copland, Rutter, Williams! will be conducted by Westwood Presbyterian’s Director of Music, Dan Redfeld. Admission is $30 available at the door or here on Eventbrite.The concert program will include selections from Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs. This collection of hymn tunes, old ballads, et al., was arranged by Copland in 1950 and 1952 for voice and piano. Copland orchestrated the works in the mid 1950’s for premieres by the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Set 1) and Ojai Festival Orchestra (Set 2). This concert will feature soloists Christina Borgioli, Devon Davidson, Emily Kerrigan, Elias Berezin, Emerson Boatwright, Matthew Lewis and the WPC Chancel Choir on the selected song accompanied by the WPC Chamber Orchestra.The center-piece of the concert is John Rutter’s Requiem, composed and premiered in 1985. The piece is dedicated to the memory of the composer’s late father. Mr. Rutter is one of the most performed composers in the world having produced dozens of religious choral hymns, anthems, carols and large scale works for choir and orchestra. He is the founder and artistic director of the Cambridge Singers, who have recorded many highly acclaimed albums on their own Collegium Records label. Rutter’s musical setting of the Latin Requiem Mass is partly inspired by Faure’s Requiem and the English choral tradition. The seven-movement Requiem is a sonic journey from darkness into light and redemption. This performance will feature soprano Christina Borgioli along with the WPC Chancel Choir and Chamber Orchestra.The concert will conclude with a performance of John Williams’ Exsultate Justi composed for the 1987 Steven Spielberg film, Empire of the Sun. This version is a concert reworking created by the composer for the Boston Pops Orchestra and Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Exsultate Justi is a setting of Psalm 32 used in the motion picture as a celebration for the liberation of the Suzhou concentration camp by American forces in August 1945. Mr. Williams is considered the preeminent film composer of his generation having written music for all 9 Star Wars films, the Indiana Jones series, the first three Harry Potter films, Schindler’s List, E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial, Jaws and over a hundred other motion pictures. His film and concert music is performed regularly around the globe and he has garnered a staggering 73 Grammy nominations, 27 Golden Globe nominations and 54 Oscar nominations. He is the conductor laureate for the Boston Pops and has also led such prestigious institutions as the London Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and most recently the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and the La Scala Philharmonic. He is also the composer for NBC News, Meet the Press and NBC Sunday Night Football.Free parking is available adjacent to the church.
