About this event

  • 2 days 4 hours

Twin Oaks Community, in cooperation with the Foundation for Intentional Community, is excited to invite you to the first Convergence of Intentional Communities (CIC pronounced “kick”), September 2-4, 2024.

The Convergence of Intentional Communities has two core goals- to build stronger relationships between intentional communities, and to guide the various organizations and networks in this field on how to best serve member communities. If you have wanted to have more influence on how communities interact with each other, this event is for you.

When is it? The CIC begins with breakfast at 8 am on Monday September 2 and ends with breakfast at 8am on Wednesday September 4. Programming runs from 9am- 6pm on Monday & Tuesday with a midday break for lunch. Before the CIC is the annual Twin Oaks Communities Conference (TOCC) August 30-Sept 1.

Where is it? The Convergence of Intentional Communities, as well as the TOCC, are hosted by Twin Oaks at their conference site in rural central Virginia.

What does my ticket include? Your ticket includes a tent campsite (bring your own camping gear), programming and activities at the CIC, and 7 meals (breakfast Monday- breakfast Wednesday). Program content runs from 9am- 6pm with a break for lunch, additional activities are available in the evenings. Indoor housing is available for a fee (subject to availability). Have questions? Reach out to us at conference@twinoaks.org

All participants are asked to contribute a dessert or snack food to share (details at the link), or pay a $20 surcharge.

All participants are expected to contribute 2 hours of work during the conference. Our work exchange option requires an additional 4 hours (6 total) to reduce the general admission price to $50, youth tickets for those ages 6-17 are $25 when attending with an adult who attends the conference on a work exchange ticket, kids 5 and under are always free.

We are committed to making these events affordable and accessible to as many people as possible. No one will be turned away due to (in)ability to pay. Tax-deductible donations made via the Foundation for Intentional Community help us support this policy, and can be made to the events via our website or our paypal donate button.

Want more information? You can find it on the CIC page of our website, or email us at to.communities.conference@gmail.com

Currently we anticipate the 2024 Covid-19 policies will be the same as 2023's, though this could change if there is a major covid outbreak. All participants must provide proof of a recent negative Covid-19 test before they enter the conference. This is to help protect the high number of vulnerable people in the community. We strongly encourage testing at home before traveling to the conference and sending us a selfie of your test result via email or text. Tests will also be available at our registration desk at cost (estimated price of $5).

Please stay home if you are feeling ill, have recently been diagnosed with Covid-19, or have had direct contact with a suspected or confirmed Covid-19 case. If you do not attend or need to leave early due to COVID-19, we will happily refund your registration fee. Even with these guidelines in place, there is some risk of Covid-19 exposure, so please consider this when deciding to attend this year.

Organized by

Twin Oaks Community is an intentional community of 100 people on 450 acres in rural central Virginia. Founded in 1967, the community values cooperation, non-violence, and egalitarianism.  The community holds land, labor, money, and other resources in common and practices a democratic form of self-governance called the Planner-Manager system.    Tours will be available during the conference.

The conference is sponsored by two different inter-community organizations. The Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC) provides publications, referrals, support services, and sharing opportunities for a wide range of intentional communities, cohousing groups, ecovillages, community networks, support organizations, and people seeking a home in community. The Federation of Egalitarian Communities (FEC) is a network of communities that hold their land, labor, and other resources in common and are committed to equality, participatory government, ecology, and non-violence.
