Contact Improvisation Class + Jam at The Center SF

Join The Center SF for a playful evening of contact improvisation. Class will be from 7:30-9pm and then will flow directly into a jam until 10:30pm. In class, we’ll explore themes of weight-sharing, counterbalancing, signaling, listening, and everything in-between. The jam that follows is an opportunity to continue researching your movement &amp; relational curiosities that sparked from class. First-timers and experienced dancers are all very welcome! SEBASTIAN | instructor. Sebastian Grubb is an award-winning dance artist and movement coach based in California. He choreographed, performed and toured contemporary dance works throughout the U.S. and overseas from 2008-2020. At the same time, he practiced and taught multiple dance forms, especially Contemporary and Contact Improvisation. Sebastian's current focus is teaching applied anatomy and somatics to movers of all kinds via workshops that emphasize deep sensing, technical refinement, and community. He became a certified Axis Syllabus Teacher in 2011. He is also the creator of AGILE BEAST, an evolutionary athletic program that builds whole-body ability by applying modern biomechanics information to ancient movement patterns. ALEX | musical artist. Alex Gilman (Aletheia) is an eclectic, improvisational musician from Sonoma County, CA. Using electric guitar loops and analog, modular synthesizers, his ambient soundscapes explore timbral textures, harmonic richness, and the hidden complexity in simplicity. His music aims to evoke delight, embodied presence, and the meeting place between bliss and grief. MERRICK | evening host. Merrick Jacob is a lover of movement, continuously in awe of the body and its potential for unique expression, creativity, &amp; authentic connection. Influenced by her practices of figure skating, acroyoga, hand balancing, and contact improvisation, she guides playful movement experiences as an opportunity for deep listening, exploration, and co-creation. She is a certified acroyoga instructor with AcroRevolution &amp; AcroYoga Montréal. Merrick studied a variety of somatic movement therapy modalities with Dynamic Embodiment &amp; The Moving On Center: School of Participatory Arts &amp; Somatic Research, focusing on BodyMind Centering &amp; Laban Movement Analysis.
