About this concert:
In this Grammy-nominated, three-part oratorio, composer Craig Hella Johnson weaves a complex, evocative, and compassionate musical response to the murder of Matthew Shepard.
On October 6, 1998, University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die. In the wake of this horrific tragedy, the Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Matthew’s parents to catalyze conversation and legislative action to protect LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities from experiencing this same violence. It is a grim reality that Matthew Shepard was not the last LGBQTIA+ person we have lost to this hate.
Philadelphia Voices of Pride Choir is proud to present this moving and important show that remembers Matthew’s bright, funny, loving personality and reflects on our call to community and action. Now more than ever, we are standing together, singing with pride, and remembering that even in the darkest moments, love is stronger than fear.
Accessibility note: Concert will include projected supertitles for libretto text. Accessible side door entrance is available at the concert venue.
