Plant with us at kihcihkaw askî-Sacred Land site!

Root for Trees, in partnership with the Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre will hold a tree planting event where we will plant up to 1500 trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers native to the surrounding land. All are welcome at this inclusive event- come to hear cultural performers share drum and song. Bannock and tea will be available for the first 150 people.

June is National Indigenous History Month and honors the histories and diversity of Indigenous Peoples. Root for Trees encourages Edmontonians to celebrate and learn by participating in this event- please invite a friend!

12:15 Opening Ceremony and Proclamation

12:30-4:00 open tree and shrub planting time, exhibitor tents open, bannock & tea

12:45 Mark's Flute performance

1:30 Bobbi-Jo Starr (Kisikaw Iskwew) performance

1:45 Brianna's Métis Fiddle performance

2:15 Jaynine McCrae shares Inuinnait culture and tradition through song & drum

3:00 Powwow performance


  • Bring layers appropriate to the weather
  • Bring a blanket to sit on while you enjoy cultural performers during the event


Weather

Root for Trees will plant rain or shine! However, in the event of severe weather, volunteer plantings may be shortened or cancelled for staff and public safety.

Severe weather conditions that would necessitate cancellation include:

  • Thunderstorms or lightning
  • Temperature equal to or above 34°C, including the Humidex
  • Wind, including gusts, of over 45 km/h
  • An air quality health index (AQHI) of 7 or above

The City of Edmonton retains the right to modify or cancel the planting in the case of inclement weather and public safety. Please check our webpage for up to date information.


Parking

Please carpool if you can- parking is limited on site. You may be able to park at Fort Edmonton Park and walk to the site, park along 142 street, or take transit!

Is there parking at this event?

Parking is limited at the kihcihkaw askî- Sacred Land facility. Please carpool if you can! You may be able to park at Fort Edmonton Park and walk to the site, park along 142 street, or take transit! There is a small parking lot on site as well- first come first serve.

What do I need to wear for this event?

Please dress according to the weather. If you would like to plant a tree or shrub, wear close toed shoes as you will be using a shovel. Gloves, shovels and plants will be provided.
