It transforms passive grief management into active prevention, helping schools, workplaces, and communities manage trauma, reduce stigma, and support vulnerable individuals. Why: A suicide or other untimely traumatic death can have a devastating impact on a community. The shock and grief goes well beyond immediate family and friends, and can have a ripple effect on many others in the community. This training provides national best practices in responding to a suicide death to reduce risk and promote healing for individuals, families, communities, schools and organizations. Who should attend? Managers and front-line staff in law enforcement, fire, education, social services, mental health and substance abuse, EMS, school staff, spirituality leaders and funeral directors. Training Highlights:<ul><li>Community response to the suicide death of a client or community member</li><li>Recognizing warning signs for suicide in clients or other community members after a suicide death</li><li>Suicide related phenomena (contagion, pacts, clusters, copycat suicides)</li><li>Strategies for encouraging help-seeking, reducing stigma, and promoting healing</li><li>Best practices on communicating safely about suicide and working with the media</li><li>Funeral and memorial guidelines and resources for families touched by suicide.</li><li>Understanding the needs and experience of survivors of suicide loss</li><li>Promoting collaboration among key stakeholders</li><li>Strategies for reducing the risk of contagion, especially with youth</li><li>Awareness of the complexity of suicide-related grief and its cultural context</li><li>Protocols for organizations, schools and/or communities who lose someone to suicide</li></ul> When a person dies by suicide, many others are deeply affected:<ul><li>One study estimated that 115 people are exposed to each suicide, with 1 in 5 reporting that this experience had a devastating impact or caused a major life disruption.1</li><li>Everyone grieves differently. All communities and organizations should be prepared to respond to a suicide death, including tribes, towns, senior living facilities, workplaces, and health care providers.Plan ahead:<ul><li>Develop a plan and protocols in advance to enable your institution or community to respond quickly and compassionately in the crisis period after a suicide death.</li><li>Be prepared to respond to the immediate emotional needs of people affected by the crisis as well as to the long-term effects and risks that may be associated with exposure.</li><li>Educate and build relationships among those who will interact with bereaved people to enable a coordinated community response rather than fragmented services. Involve law enforcement, emergency medical services, community mental health, social service agencies, and other institutions.</li><li>Consider adopting the Active Postvention Model, in which trained volunteer teams reach out to provide support and resources to survivors as soon after a suicide death as possible.
