Throughout the year, we teach poetry in schools, host a month-long festival, and publish poems in books and unexpected places like rooftops, billboards, and fences using a process called Civic Publishing. Our work is an act of love for this city, inviting residents to share their stories and write a new one together. An ekphrastic poetry workshop that guides participants through writing inspired by the “spirits” that exist at The Deering Estate.

Deering Estate

Conjuring Spirits is an ekphrastic poetry workshop that guides participants through writing, generating new work inspired by and in conversation with the “spirits” that exist at The Deering Estate—both spectral and alcoholic. The estate provides participants with the opportunity to explore the property from a historical, cultural, environmental, and personal perspective. Presented in partnership with the Deering Estate. After a guided writing session that incorporates “tales from the wine cellar,” “Deering ghost stories,” theme-specific sample poetry, and ekphrastic poetry writing tips, participants will be given the opportunity to explore the main house and grounds prior to moving to the wine cellar for a targeted, generative writing session.About your facilitatorCaridad Moro-Gronlier is the author of Tortillera (TRP 2021) and Visionware (Finishing Line Press 2009).
