Join us on weekends or schedule a special visit by appointment to immerse yourself in Cathy's cultural impact. Take a self-guided tour outdoors across Joshua Tree or Wonder Valley, engage in events in response to her work in Twentynine Palms, and get a firsthand look at the inspiration behind her life and work. Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage with the high desert art inclinations of Cathy Allen firsthand. We will share a downloadable guide to all the Conjuring Cathy Allen events and activities. Who is Cathy Allen?

Artist Allen moved to the high desert in 1993 to apprentice with Noah Purifoy following her studies at Otis and Claremont where she earned her MFA. She led the Fine Arts department at Copper Mountain Community College and served the Morongo Basin as a cultural maven, connecting artists and orgs.

What is a NURP/Dwelling?

Though temporary and physically non-urbane, the dwellings pay tribute to the historical monuments of place and domesticity. The work is a commentary on transience, ownership, and gentrification issues in unique non-urban communities. Visit Allen's extant NURPs on our Self-Guided Tour.

Who is Opera del Espacio?

Opera del Espacio began as a collective of performing artists and designers focused on site-specific work to reveal new possibilities in public spaces by physically responding to the environment. Informed by Mary Overlie’s Viewpoints, we begin with the architecture and incorporate responses.
