Brief introduction to training

Confined Spaces are areas not designed for regular work that are usually designed with only one entrance/ exit and are usually isolated; confined spaces are sometimes characterized by hazardous (usually non-breathable, asphyxiating) environmental conditions where a permit to work is a requirement while other types do not. Permit Required Confined Spaces (PRCS) include pits, tanks, ducts, manholes etc. Maintenance personnel are the only specialty that is often called to perform work in such an area. This training provides the basic knowledge in conducting safe maintenance works in the PRCS’s hazardous environments as well as providing the necessary rescue operations in case of emergency.

Who is the course for?

The course is addressed to the managerial, supervisory as well as technical personnel that are involved in maintenance works whether they directly execute or simply supervise PRCS works. It is also addressed to Safety Professionals (Engineers, Auditors, Consultants, Trainers) and members of the Health & Safety Committees.

What will you learn?

The attendees will be able to learn:

  • How to identify a confined space in the workplace with examples

  • How to distinguish whether a confined space is a PRCS

  • How to conduct a Risk Assessment by identifying the hazards

  • Hazardous atmospheres (toxic, flammable, asphyxiating etc.)

  • What does a Safe Method of Work in a PRCS include

  • What type of measurements must be conducted prior to entry and in what order

  • Signage of a Confined Space (during normal operation and during works execution)

  • PRCS ventilation

  • Personal Protective Equipment to enter a PRCS (gloves, hard hat, goggles, breathing apparatus, safety boots/ shoes etc.)

  • PRCS Safe Work Permit including an analysis of the contents, its link to the Risk Assessment and guidance for filling in the necessary information prior to entering the PRCS and after the work completion

  • Control Systems (LOTOTO, grounding, illumination etc.)

  • Supervision

  • Rescue systems (Tripods with hoist, lifeline and full body harness)

  • Accountabilities, responsibilities, authorities of involved personnel

Trainer CV

Dr George Scroubelos is a Mechanical Engineer with MSc in Aerospace Engineering and PhD on Risk Assessment; he has served as an adjunct professor of Ergonomics at Piraeus University during the academic periods 2006-2015. He is currently General Manager of a group of consulting companies in Greece and Cyprus, MB member of the Hellenic Maintenance Society as well as Chairman of the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies’ (EFNMS) OH&S Committee. He has worked in industrial plants in heavy industry as well as in underground mining as a Mechanical Engineer in charge of maintenance as well as health, safety & environmental protection a field in which he has extensive experience since 1987. He is an approved health, safety & environmental consultant and trainer in both Greece and Cyprus. He is currently heading a team of health & safety experts that provide consulting to mainly big multinational companies on health, safety, environmental and crisis management issues.
