Confidence in the Future

Founded by visionary community leaders in 1962, The Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is a pioneer in advancing cultural equity in The Bronx. From our early beginnings as a presenter of affordable arts programming in select Bronx neighborhoods, we have grown into a cultural hub that serves the entire creative ecosystem of the borough.  Our programs serve artists, the public, and the field at large by building connections, providing resources, and advocating for equitable practices. Then as now, we focus on supporting the work of underrepresented groups – especially artists of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Through this lens we offer affordable programs for seniors and youth, and provide direct services to over 1,000 artists and 250 community-based arts groups each year.

Join us for an open conversation with artists of ‘Confidence in the Future.’

<p>Covid-19 has shifted New Yorkers&#x27; lives from public existence into private spaces. Residents are grappling with how to conceptualize this change in relational existence and how to respond to it. The Bronx in particular is home to many black and latino/x people who are disproportionately carrying the burden of Covid-19. As communities mourn, people are also helping neighbors, creating art, and trying to connect through distance. In times, of hardship, it is often artists who are able to speak the unnamable, approach the unknown, and offer perspective on our collective lived conditions; and it is community and advocacy that keep us well. Join us for an open conversation with the artists of ‘Confidence in the Future,&#x27; and community advocacy organization Nos Quedamos. We will discuss how Covid-19 is affecting artists in the Bronx, how the effects of the pandemic have changed the conditions of work and the environment, and explore individual perspectives on life and community in the Bronx now. Featuring artists Kim Dacres, Toisha Tucker, and Charlie Elo , along with Jessica Clemente, CEO Nos Quedamos. </p><p></p>
