Music from Asia: A New Musical Identity
Every region of the vast Asian continent has its own folk music practice, each as unique as the cultures from which they’re born. The joining of European compositional techniques with traditional ethnic and national Asian music has transformed the art form as composers from Asia create a wholly new body of work. In this Inside Pitc, we will see the results of this coming together through the music of composers inspired and influenced by their own musical inheritance.
2:30 PM | CONCERT II: Stories from Asia
Asia is home to as many folk music traditions as there are languages and dialects in a continent that stretches from Istanbul to the Bering Strait. On this FOLKLORE program are works by composers inspired by the rich traditions of China, Tibet, Japan, and India. You will enjoy a selection of beautiful Korean folk songs as well as the thrilling work Blaze by Indian-American composer Reena Esmail, which includes the traditional Indian tabla, an instrument considered one of the most difficult in the world to master.
