Welcome CTS Attendee

Welcome to the 2023-2024 CTS interdisciplinary educational program. It is exciting to announce that CTS is now an intercontinental educational platform!

As the public's faith in expert opinion continues to grow in dentistry and medicine, there is an increased demand for specialized care in areas such as airway and sleep-related disorders. This demand is expected to persist, even in a high-inflation economy, which means that clinicians who possess the knowledge and skills to address these conditions will remain in high demand.

The expanding understanding of the interplay between oral health, airway, breathing, temporomandibular joint disorders, and systemic health highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the unique role that knowledgeable dental and allied medical clinicians can play in improving patient outcomes.

One significant area of focus is pediatric sleep apnea, which has gained attention due to its negative implications on the growth and development of children. Recognizing and addressing sleep apnea in children is crucial to ensuring their overall health and well-being. Parents are increasingly willing to prioritize their children's health, and dental practitioners with expertise in this area can play a vital role in diagnosing and treating pediatric sleep apnea.

In this interdisciplinary approach, dental and allied medical clinicians can collaborate with sleep physicians to address the complex nature of airway, breathing, and sleep-related disorders. Working together can provide comprehensive interdisciplinary care and help bridge the gap between dental and medical specialties.

*The study club meetings are held as virtual sessions with 15 hours of total continuing dental/medical education through Zoom video conferencing.*

Seminar Overviews:

September Session

Seminar 1: “Pediatric Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders: Practical Interdisciplinary Approach to Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Treatment”

(Wednesday, September 27, 2023 : 6:00 - 9:00 pm PST)

Presenters: Joseph Yousefian DMD MS MA, Henry Rowshan DDS

(3 CE Credits)

The impact of sleep-related breathing disorders and temporomandibular joint disorders on pediatric dental and medical well-being has become more evident. These conditions can have far-reaching effects on a child’s overall health and quality of life, and practitioners must be aware of their potential impact.

Recently, pediatric sleep apnea has gained attention due to its negative implications on the growth and development of children. Recognizing and addressing sleep apnea in children is crucial to ensuring their overall health and well-being. Parents are increasingly willing to prioritize their children's health, and practitioners with expertise in this area can play a vital role in diagnosing and treating pediatric sleep apnea. This presentation provides information on screening, early diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric sleep-related breathing disorders and how and when to involve other practitioners.

Learning objectives:

Screening and early diagnosis of the upper airway (UA) and sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) in children.

• Prevention and proper management of UA and SRBD.

• Proper treatment of easy to complex UA and SRBD.

November Session

Seminar 2: “Pharyngorofacial Imaging for Evaluation of Upper Airway and Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders in Children”

(Wednesday, November 15, 2023: 6:00 - 9:00 pm PST)

Presenters: Dania Tamimi BDS DMSC, Joseph Yousefian DMD MS MA

(3 CE Credits)

Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) and its severe form, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is an often-overlooked diagnosis in children. The gold standard for diagnosing this condition is polysomnography, but this can be expensive, time-consuming, and not widely available. Children that present with clinical signs of SRBD and OSA should be evaluated clinically, and, if presenting with signs of obstruction, CBCT can be used for the evaluation of the upper respiratory tract to determine these areas of obstruction and determine the course of action for relieving it. In this presentation, Dr. Tamimi will discuss some anatomic and pathologic obstruction areas as visualized on CBCT. Dr. Yousefian will demonstrate the relationship between the pediatric SRBD and OSA to different areas of obstruction in the upper respiratory tract and the clinical methodology for the correction.

Learning Objectives:

Learning the most common upper respiratory tract obstruction areas as can be visualized on CBCT.

• Understanding the limitations and pitfalls of CBCT evaluation for upper respiratory tract obstruction.

• Demonstrating the clinical cases with SRBD and OSA resulting from upper respiratory dysfunction and structural obstruction.

January Session

Seminar 3: “The Role of Airway, Sleep, and Breathing in Health, Performance and Patient Outcomes: Developing a Collaborative Approach to Treatment Planning.”

(January 17, 2024: 6:00 - 9:00 pm PST)

Presenters: Pat Mc Bride, Ph.D., CCSH, Howard Hindin DDS

(3 CE Credits)

Hidden Airway, Sleep, and Breathing problems (ASB), often present from childhood, are the seeds that lead to chronic disease, poor performance, behavior issues, and failed treatment outcomes. ASB disorders are uniquely expressed depending on epigenetics and other factors. This presentation provides information to recognize these disorders, consider them in your treatment planning, and how and when to involve other practitioners.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the role of the airway, sleep, and breathing (ASB) in the development of chronic disease.

• Recognize the presence of ASB, epigenetic factors in treatment planning for the individual patient.

• Learn methods to build collaborative connections for optimal care.

March Session

Seminar 4: “Interdisciplinary treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, utilizing nonsurgical weight loss and bariatric surgeries in management of obesity.”

(Wednesday, March 20, 2024: 6:00 - 9:00 pm PST)

Presenters: Peter Billing MD, Eric Harris MD FACS, Steve Carstensen DDS FAGD FICD, Joseph Yousefian DMD MS MA

(3 CE Credits)

The most favorable care for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is treatment provided by an interdisciplinary team that includes members from the appropriate dental and medical disciplines.

Weight loss and bariatric metabolic surgery, usually used for treating severe obesity, have also been documented as effective treatments for OSA in patients with morbid obesity. A significant number of patients with obesity who have OSA and undergo intensive pharmaceutical and lifestyle interventions or weight loss surgery achieve some degree of remission. This interdisciplinary presentation provides information to recognize these treatment options, including a case report.

Learning Objectives:

Principles of nonsurgical weight loss and their role in the treatment of obesity.

• Principals of bariatric surgeries and their role in the treatment of obesity and OSA.

• Different types of bariatric surgical procedures and their indication for weight loss.

May Session

Seminar 5: “Treatment of the narrow face, narrow smile and obstructive sleep apnea.”

(Wednesday, May 8, 2024: 6:00 - 9:00 pm PST)

Presenters: Yousefian DMD MS MA, Chandur Wadhwani DMD MS, Sam Bobek MD DMD, Jay Levy DMD

(3 CE Credits)

Correction of the narrow face and smile, especially when combined with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is the most challenging medical and dental treatment regarding the individual's facial esthetic and systemic health. Many people with the condition may not be aware that they have it. However, untreated conditions can cause problems. This affects how people look, breathe, sleep, eat, and talk. This can lead to complications, such as snoring, sleep apnea, fatigue, jaw misalignment, crowded teeth, and worn down or, broken teeth. Because the physical signs are so mild, many people already deal with one or more of these problems before they’re diagnosed. This interdisciplinary presentation provides information to describe the treatment options and protocols, including case reports.

Learning Objectives:

The developmental and physiological aspects of a narrow face and smile.

• Diagnostic challenges and targeted treatment approach.

• Interdisciplinary medical and dental approach for improvement of the dentofacial esthetics and airway.
