Embedding compassion in curricula through teaching and assessing compassionate behaviours for groupwork

Groupwork is an increasing feature of the teaching and learning experience in higher education, presenting many opportunities and challenges. Using the example of work undertaken by Dr Theo Gilbert and colleagues at the University of Hertfordshire this online seminar will provide a forum to discuss the opportunities and challenges and explore how teaching the micro-skills of compassion can enhance social and task achievement experiences in groupwork. This seminar will feature presentation and discussion of the University of Hertfordshire experience of embedding compassion into their curricula, through teaching and assessing compassionate behaviours for groupwork.Learning Outcomes:<ul><li>Discuss the theoretical basis for rooting compassion into university curricula.</li><li>Explore how the enactment of compassion can promote inclusivity and critical thinking in groupwork.</li><li>Consider how the micro-skills of compassion can be taught and assessed.</li></ul>

<h3>About Dr Theo Gilbert:</h3>Dr Theo Gilbert SFHEA, is Associate Professor, Learning and Teaching at the University of Hertfordshire. He has a PhD (2015) on the psycho biological nature of compassion and how relevant - in HE teaching, learning and assessment design – this new understanding of compassion is, to student mental wellbeing, and more particularly, the BAME awarding gap. This has remained his area of interest and applied research, to extend current integrations of the (credit-bearing, evidence-based) micro skills of compassionate communications for diverse/smart, group/team work into more universities, disciplines and degree programmes.See <a href="https://compassioninhe.wordpress.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://compassioninhe.wordpress.com/</a>
