Civic Media Center

The CMC presents: COMMUNITY SPACE. Join us for a discussion with four DIY and organizing spaces that help build and shape our communities.

Tune in to learn about the incredible work that goes into maintaining our beloved DIY spaces, as well as how in a changing world, these spaces are more important than ever. The event will be 90 minutes, with the last 30 minutes devoted to a public Q+A.Sliding scale donations will benefit all of these spaces. Panelists will be joining us from:Civic Media Center (CMC), Gainesville, FL: The CMC is an alternative library, reading room and info shop aimed at giving the local community access to information and points of view that are under-reported or distorted by mainstream media. As a community- based 501 (c)3 non-profit, the CMC stays open through a public-access library, educational discussions, workshops, and live music shows, while also serving as the home for WGOT-LP 101 FM community radio and meeting and event space for local organizers.Firestorm Books &amp; Coffee, Asheville, NC: Firestorm Books is a queer and feminist collective-run bookshop prioritizing cooperative, libertarian principles through horizontal leadership, providing a hub for anarchist thought and culture in western North Carolina. This is made possible through workshops, film screenings, fundraisers, and presentations. The space also serves organic and fairly-traded coffee, tea, and locally made vegan pastries.Power U Center for Social Change, Miami, FL: Working to foster Black and Brown Youth Leadership, PowerU organizes in South Florida to lead the struggle to liberate all oppressed people. PowerU harnesses collective energy by addressing the educational gaps in South Florida through two primary initiatives: Fighting sexual harassment and impunity in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and working to redirect funds and budget plans that fuel the School-to-Prison pipeline in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Word Up Community Bookshop, New York City, NY: Located in Washington Heights, WordUp Community Books is a multi-lingual, general interest community bookshop and arts space. As a program of the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization Seven Stories Institute, WordUP believes in using books as an instrument of reciprocal education and exchange. Their work extends to hosting readings, concerts, screenings, art exhibitions, talks, and workshops.
