Description

Come join us for our first annual Community Day!

(artwork by Suzanne Pickett)

We're taking our work deeper and wider into the community with this new event, meant to reinforce our mission to nurture and celebrate the individual voice through writing and community-building.

Inspired by our BIRDS theme this fall (birds are symbols for women, for voice, for higher consciousness, and for the health of a community), we've planned a number of events this day to celebrate birds, community, and raising our voices to transform ourselves and our communities. Here's what we've set up:

URBAN BIRD WALK
8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Starting from our front door here in Riverside, you'll learn tips and tricks on how to be an urban birdwatcher. You might be surprised to find out what you're missing. We will walk down to the river and back up a neighborhood street, pointing out birds, noticing the native plants and trees they need to live, and exploring how to create a bird-friendly habitat in our urban neighborhoods. We'll read some bird-inspired poetry to get us started and write our discoveries in a special commUNITY journal. Thanks to Jody Willis, the president of the Duval Audubon Society, for guiding this tour. All genders welcome.

OPEN HOUSE
10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
We will take a short break with an open house so you can grab a snack and see our bird-inspired art show featuring six local women artists and six local women writers. All genders welcome.

LUNCH-AND-LEARN
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Wild Birds Unlimited will teach you how to create a bird-friendly yard with feeders and bird-friendly habitats. Bring a bag lunch. We will serve the drinks! Be sure to check out the art show while you're here, and pick up your own birding journal before you leave! All genders welcome.

OPEN MIC
2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Join us for an open mic for female writers, poets, spoken word performers, and “songsters” in the front yard, with refreshments inside so you'll have another chance to look at the art. The extra good news is that Liz Wolfe and her ukulele will fly all the way down from New York City to lead some ukulele-inspired singing...and maybe lead a ukulele jam afterward. Bring your writing, your poems, your voice, and your ukulele or other instrument and share your talents with the flock assembled on our front lawn! It should be a blast. Women and female-identifying welcome to read or perform; all genders welcome to attend.

HOW TO REGISTER
Register for all these events or just one by picking your ticket on Eventbrite. All events are free and of course, all donations welcome! Hope to see you!
