The Wide Awakes were a Civil War-era activist group who supported the abolition of slavery. Carrying lanterns and donning capes, they marched through the streets at night campaigning for freedom for all. Their capes ultimately became a icon of the movement.The present-day<a href="https://wideawakes.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Wide Awakes</a> are a community of voices that pay homage to the original Wide Awakes and their protest fashion by wearing bold, handmade capes designed by artists such as Wildcat Ebony Brown.We invite you to join artists Wildcat Ebony Brown and Lynore Routté in a workshop to create a Wide Awakes cape with your own personal touch! Sewing skills are not required.Space in this workshop is limited. Please only register if you&#x27;re able to attend.About Wildcat Ebony BrownWildcat Ebony Brown is a Brooklyn-based Queer, Feminist Artivist who’s process balances intuition and experimentation harmoniously. Her work, vibrant and exhilarating, is a cross discipline of mixed media, installation, performance art, painting and collage. Originally from Tulsa Oklahoma and raised in southern Maryland, she is an autodidact visionary, possesses innate artistic sensibility and creates via contemplative response. Through authentically embracing her myriad incarnations, she willfully utilizes a multitude of acquired skill sets to navigate, curate and occupy various cultural spaces A founding member and key collaborator of the Wide Awakes, she conceptualizes and curates site specific activations. Understanding how artist-led activism empowers and liberates both communities and individuals enables her to produce safe, unconventional forms of civic engagement rooted in diversity, inclusion and collective joy. A﻿bout Lynore RouttéLynore Routté is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily with repurposed materials. Raised by a biology teaching mom who sewed, crocheted, knitted and could make something out of seemingly nothing, Lynore learned to respect a wide variety of potential mediums. She’s bringing hand sewing, embellishing and love of mixed textiles to the Chazen Museum through the re:mancipation project as a member of MASK consortium.
