Join Occidental President Harry J. Elam, Jr. in conversation with Patt Morrison '74 H'12 on Monday, September 21 at 3 p.m. This will be the second event in the College’s new Community Book Program, in which the entire Oxy community is invited to read the same book and come together to discuss its themes and importance through shared programs. Learn why President Elam chose Red at the Bone: A Novel as the first book for Oxy to read together, and how his choice reflects his background, values, and hopes and aspirations for Occidental.
Patt Morrison is a longtime Los Angeles Times writer, columnist and podcaster whose journalism has earned a share in two Pulitzer Prizes. Her broadcasting work has won six Emmys as host of KCET-TV’s "Life & Times," as well as 12 Golden Mike awards, which include her work on the local NPR affiliate KPCC. Both of her nonfiction books have been bestsellers: Rio LA, about the Los Angeles River, and Don’t Stop the Presses! Truth, Justice and the American Newspaper. She is the first woman in nearly 25 years to be honored with the L.A. Press Club’s lifetime achievement award. Pink’s, the legendary Hollywood hot dog stand, named its veggie dog after her.
The theme for this year is “Oxy Reads Together: One College, One Book.” Red at the Bone: A Novel is President Elam’s personal choice as the first community book. He spoke with author Jacqueline Woodson on August 18 to kick off the College’s new Community Book Program. Woodson’s novel follows two black families of different classes whose lives become intertwined when their only children conceive a child together in their teens.
