About this event

    A great opportunity refresh and improve communication within your intimate relationships and/or to learn and heal from past relationships!

    We welcome you whether you're currently in an intimate relationship or single or "it's complicated"!

    This is a 5-week committed ONLINE program. Class times/dates: 7pm to 9pm on Monday Sep. 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, Oct. 6th, 2025.

    "In the past my husband and I would hold onto hurts, giving each other the cold shoulder and also have frequent blow ups. Since doing the Communication in Intimate Relationships class, when we do have a disagreement or misunderstanding we can self connect and within minutes reconnect with each other. In the past it used to be hours, days, even weeks of disconnect. I tell my friends and my clients about NVC and how it's helped me and us." ~ Former participant in the "Communication in Intimate Relationships" program

    "I just wanted to send a note of deep gratitude for the Connected Conversation Process. I'm just starting to use it more with my partner, and it's really really helping us get through some harder stuff. Whew! Just going back to it again and again is transformative. We are finally making some progress in feeling heard and seen mutually after previously talking past each other." ~ Former participant in this program, 2024.

    Earlybird price until Sep 1st, 2025: $199 (plus Eventbrite admin fee, which is nonrefundable)

    Sliding scale pricing $225 - $340 per person for the program (plus Eventbrite admin fee, which is nonrefundable). The sliding scale pricing means we'd love to receive $340 per person for the program, since this price is chosen to support the sustainability of the Communication Dojo. However, we also want to be able to welcome those for whom the $340 price is not affordable, so we're making a range of ticket prices available.

    If money is an obstacle please write to us at info@communicationdojo.com to ask about possible payment plans or partial/full scholarships.

    The live classes are conducted over Zoom video conference. If you ever miss a class or want to review a class, you can view class recordings in our dedicated online resource area, which will become accessible by noon on Sep. 11th, 2025 and remain accessible until Mar. 11th, 2026.

    "Nonviolent communication (or connected communication) has helped me and my partner speak in a much more conscious and effective way. It was a perfect transition and supplement to our prior couples therapy. It helps in every way, at work, with friends, with family, etc. I can't recommend these classes and Newt as a teacher enough. I wish we all had to take NVC classes in school, it would change the world." ~ Elise H., San Francisco

    Communication in Intimate Relationships

    "It may be most difficult to empathize with those we are closest to" ~ Marshall Rosenberg, PhD., Founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication

    Intimate relationships can become fertile ground for highly disconnected modes of communication. There can be fierce fights where we resort to the usual tactics of blame, judgment, criticism, demands, threats and "the silent treatment." Fueling the fire we have the well-known hot-button topics between primary partners: money, children, physical intimacy, jealousy & attachment, priorities, religion & politics, etc.

    I hear variations on the following comments often:

    "I don't like how we communicate, but we don't seem to be able to change it, and it's maybe getting worse"

    "Our issues are not really about communication."

    "If only my partner would change, I think we'd get along much better."

    Regardless of who starts it, it takes two to continue a fight or to engage in disconnected, frustrating and ineffective communication. So, even if just one of you becomes more open to dialogue, and less willing to fight, positive change happens. If you both want this change, it will happen even more quickly.

    In this program we'll be covering the essentials of healthy communication within intimate relationships. Even if you don't believe that your issues are really about communication, you will not be able to address them effectively unless you have a way of communicating that works for you both. We invite you to take the plunge and join us! Our workshop participants are often surprised by how much fun they have as they work together on improving their communication!

    The Communication Dojo

    The Communication Dojo is a learning environment designed for everyone, regardless of prior experience with "Connected Communication" (aka "Nonviolent Communication" (NVC)). This 5 week committed program format allows you opportunities to practice what you're learning between classes, then to come back the next week with questions. You'll build skills, knowledge, and community week by week.

    "As soon as you concern yourself with the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others will weaken and defeat you."

    — Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido

    The Communication Dojo approach is inspired in part by teaching from martial arts. This is not a lecture series. The teaching is highly interactive and there will be plenty of experiential learning in pairs and/or small groups - “learning by doing.”

    Some features of the Communication Dojo 5-week ONLINE program workshops:

    • Efficient use of class time to maximize learning
    • High proportion of practice time in pairs – learning communication by communicating.
    • Minimal reliance on “jargon” i.e. language that might be confusing or alienating for those not familiar with NVC.

    • Dedicated online resource area for the program with:

    ---> Video recordings of online classes, so you can review classes after you've attended them or catch up if you're unable to attend any of the classes live

    ---> Weekly practice requests

    ---> Extra videos and materials

    • Daily article for 3 weeks of the program with bonus material:

    ---> “Lifescripts” i.e.examples of specific dialogues and wording to bring the principles more alive and help you to integrate them

    ---> Videos

    ---> Articles

    ---> Quotations/Poetry/Readings to capture the essence of the topic

    • Same cohort of students for the whole 5 weeks
    • Practice suggestions each week

    About Newt Bailey, Lead Trainer

    Newt’s passion is to help people communicate with each other more deeply, to experience greater intimacy, and to find the potential for mutually-satisfying change that lies within conflict.

    From his first training in 2005 Newt has set out to understand and share with others the essential core of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) - which he often calls "Connected Communication". He believes strongly in teaching the principles of NVC in a way that frees students from specialized language, and allows facility with connected communication to grow in small, quickly assimilated steps. The Communication Dojo provides Newt with an enviroment where he teaches the principles by which he lives, including his most recent insights and approaches.

    Since 2006 Newt has been facilitating NVC groups, and leading public workshops and workshops in organizational settings including corporations, not-for-profit organizations, schools and San Quentin prison. He has led retreats and yearlong programs in the USA and Europe. Newt has a private practice as a consultant and coach, with particular focus on communication, conflict resolution and leadership.

    About Leeza Pesenson, Assistant Trainer

    Leeza is passionate about understanding how our minds work and how we connect with each other. She studied cognitive psychology and works as a User Experience Researcher by day. Leeza fell madly in love with NVC after attending Newt’s drop-in classes at The Center SF in 2018 and has been a dedicated practitioner ever since. She has participated in immersion programs in NVC, Mediation, Conflict Coaching, and Inner Compass work with Oren Sofer, Roxy Manning, John Kinyon, and Arnina Kashtan. Since 2020, Leeza has assisted Newt and organized her own NVC practice and empathy groups. She is overjoyed to be sharing NVC on a larger scale as part of the Communication Dojo team.
