"Nonviolent communication (or connected communication) has helped me and my partner speak in a much more conscious and effective way. It was a perfect transition and supplement to our prior couples therapy. It helps in every way, at work, with friends, with family, etc. I can't recommend these classes and Newt as a teacher enough. I wish we all had to take NVC classes in school, it would change the world." ~ Elise H., San Francisco

Dealing with Anger and Negative Judgments – Your Own and Other People’s - and Creating a Practice of Self-Connection

"Anger can be valuable if we use it as an alarm clock to wake us up - to realize we have a need that's not being met and that we are thinking in a way that makes it unlikely to be met." ~Marshall Rosenberg, PhD., from his book: Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life

When others speak while angry you might have a hard time hearing them, even though they really want to be heard. In this series we’ll practice ways to make it easier to listen and stay connected, even when there is a lot of anger. We’ll also practice methods of self-connection and self-understanding that help you figure out the true message of your own anger and that of others, and to extract meaning and direction from even the most painful judgments. Many find that if they get the true message of their anger, it comes back less often.

The Communication Dojo

The Communication Dojo is a learning environment designed for everyone, regardless of prior experience with "Connected Communication" (aka "Nonviolent Communication" (NVC)). This 4-week committed series format allows you opportunities to practice what you're learning between classes, then to come back the next week with questions. You'll build skills, knowledge, and community week by week.

"As soon as you concern yourself with the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others will weaken and defeat you." ~Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido

The Communication Dojo approach is inspired in part by teaching from martial arts. This is not a lecture series. The teaching is highly interactive and there will be plenty of experiential learning in pairs and/or small groups - “learning by doing.”

Some features of the Communication Dojo:

  • Efficient use of class time to maximize learning
  • High proportion of practice time in pairs – learning communication by communicating.
  • Minimal reliance on “jargon” i.e. language that might be confusing or alienating for those not familiar with NVC.
  • Online classroom for the series with:

---> Audio recordings of classes

---> Additional class notes

---> Handouts

---> Weekly practice requests

---> Extra videos and materials

  • Daily post for the duration of the series with bonus material:

---> “Lifescripts” i.e.examples of specific dialogues and wording to bring the principles more alive and help you to integrate them

---> Videos

---> Articles

---> Quotations/Poetry/Readings to capture the essence of the topic

  • Same cohort of students for the whole 4 weeks
  • Practice requests each week
  • Opportunity to form ongoing practice relationship with other students
  • More week-to-week support in overcoming obstacles and forming new communication habits
  • Class size typically between 12 and 30

About Newt Bailey, Lead Trainer

Newt’s passion is to help people communicate with each other more deeply, to experience greater intimacy, and to find the potential for mutually-satisfying change that lies within conflict.

From his first training in 2005 Newt has set out to understand and share with others the essential core of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) - which he often calls "Connected Communication". He believes strongly in teaching the principles of NVC in a way that frees students from specialized language, and allows facility with connected communication to grow in small, quickly assimilated steps. The Communication Dojo provides Newt with an enviroment where he teaches the principles by which he lives, including his most recent insights and approaches.

Since 2006 Newt has been facilitating NVC groups, and leading public workshops and workshops in organizational settings including corporations, not-for-profit organizations, schools and San Quentin prison. He has led retreats and yearlong programs in the USA and Europe. Newt has a private practice as a consultant and coach, with particular focus on communication, conflict resolution and leadership.

About Leeza Pesenson, Assistant Trainer

Leeza is passionate about understanding how our minds work and how we connect with each other. She studied cognitive psychology and works as a User Experience Researcher by day. Leeza fell madly in love with NVC after attending Newt’s drop-in classes at The Center SF in 2018 and has been a dedicated practitioner ever since. She has participated in immersion programs in NVC, Mediation, Conflict Coaching, and Inner Compass work with Oren Sofer, Roxy Manning, John Kinyon, and Arnina Kashtan. Since 2020, Leeza has assisted Newt and organized her own NVC practice and empathy groups. She is overjoyed to be sharing NVC on a larger scale as part of the Communication Dojo team.
