Join Dr. Russell Johnson for this special SSFM Learning Weekend workshop!
Polarization makes it seem like there are two fundamentally opposed types of people, and productive conversations between opposing sides are impossible. But is this actually the case in the contemporary United States? What does it look like to "love your enemies" in polarized times? How can we communicate in ways that are simultaneously compassionate and disruptive?
SSFM students pursuing a certificate are expected to attend.
The cost of this workshop offsets the operating costs of the Stevenson School for Ministry. SSFM is dedicated to the lifelong learning and discernment processes of all Episcopalians in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania and beyond. This workshop has a price tier option. Whether a complimentary ticket, $25, $50, or $100 donation fits your life - everyone will receive the same experience.
Dr. Russell Johnson teaches religious studies at the University of Chicago. He studies the philosophy of communication and Christian ethics, with a specific focus on disagreement, antagonism, and how groups imagine and treat their enemies. His book, Beyond Civility in Social Conflict: Dialogue, Critique, and Religious Ethics (Cambridge, 2024) is about the ethics of communication and how to challenge people's views in a compassionate and disruptive way.
