Mary Ellen “Mel” Miller, APR, will present “Communicating Through Challenges” to the Lookout Chapter on Oct. 2. In this presentation, she will describe the “communications balancing act” of the TVA Boone Dam, a $457 million infrastructure project located in Northeast Tennessee. She will describe three leadership competencies she has used at the Boone Dam Project that are transferable to anyone facing a communications challenge: Communications, Conflict Management and Business Acumen.
Mary Ellen Miller, APR, is the Community Relations Program Manager at TVA’s Boone Dam, a $457 million infrastructure project, where she has worked since September 2015. “Mel,” as she is known to her co-workers, majored in communications in college and has practiced the profession ever since. A former television news anchor for WJHL-TV, she has held marketing and public relations leadership positions at businesses in the TriCities including Nuclear Fuel Services, Hunter, Smith &amp; Davis law firm and East Tennessee State University. She owned her own PR firm, MarketingMel, for six years prior to joining TVA as a full-time contractor.  
In April she was awarded the Tri-Cities Chapter’s highest service award, the “Rod Irvin Excellence in Public Relations Award,” given to career professionals who have made a significant contribution to the profession of public relations in the Tri-Cities. It is named for the late Rod Irvin, a longtime Eastman spokesman who helped define standards of excellence for public relations and communication professionals in the Tri-Cities. 
Mel believes in helping the next generation of PR pro’s. She funds an annual public relations scholarship at ETSU and she has mentored many rising stars in the field of public relations. Mel is a founding member of the TriCities chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and currently serves on the board as liaison to area universities and colleges. 
In April 2018 she earned her Accreditation in Public Relations. Mel has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Cornell University and an MBA from ETSU.  
She lives in Johnson City with her husband Dan, teenaged son Skyler, and Jack Russell mix, Lucky.
