The Environmental Learning Center at CCC hosts Professional Development workshops for Environmental Professionals. Topics will include areas related to stormwater management, wetland/river restoration and ecology, and more.

<h2>Workshop Description:</h2><p>Scientists and engineers should not be condemned to dry, monotonous, and uninspired presentations, because science is not boring. The natural sciences are some of the most exciting and dynamic fields of science and it is up to us to reflect our enthusiasm and passion in every talk we give and every message we deliver. Improve your public speaking skills, feel less nervous, and actually enjoy getting up in front of a crowd.</p><p>Join Janine Castro to learn a few simple techniques to dramatically improve your delivery and your impact. You will leave the workshop armed with useful skills to develop and deliver inspired presentations and to improve your everyday communication. Whether you are a seasoned speaker or a relative novice, this course is for you. The workshop is highly interactive and builds on the collective experience of the audience and the instructor.</p><p><br></p><h2>Instructors:</h2><p><strong><strong>Janine Castro, Ph.D., R.G.   </strong></strong>Geomorphologist</p><p>Janine Castro provides national and international training on stream restoration, river science, geomorphology, and public speaking for scientists. She is co-founder and Technical Director of Portland State University’s River Restoration Professional Certificate Program and is a member of the Columbia Estuary Ecosystem Restoration Program’s Expert Regional Technical Group, which reviews ecosystem restoration actions in the floodplain of the lower Columbia River and estuary. Janine recently retired from Federal service where she worked as a geomorphologist and supervisory scientist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service for 24 years and spent the preceding 10 years working for the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Janine is one of the five founding members of River Restoration Northwest and the co-founder of Science Talk.</p><p><strong><strong>Education</strong></strong>: BS Geology and BA Geography, 1991, CSU Chico; MS Interdisciplinary Studies, Environmental Geomorphology, 1993, CSU Chico; PhD Geosciences, 1997, Oregon State University, Corvallis.</p><p><strong><strong>Specialties</strong></strong>: Aquatic Habitat Restoration, Geomorphology, Science Communication</p>

<h2>Learning Outcomes:</h2><h3>Upon completion of this workshop students should be able to:</h3><ul><li>Refine and distill a clear message</li><li>Utilize a thorough checklist for planning, designing, practicing, preparing, delivering, and evaluating a presentation</li><li>Develop and deliver engaging and effective presentations</li><li>Evaluate presentations and give feedback to others</li></ul><p><br></p><h2>Major Topics:</h2><ul><li>Oral presentations and communication</li><li>Planning, designing, practicing, preparing, delivering, and evaluating a presentation</li><li>Public speaking</li><li>Communication skills</li></ul><p><strong><strong>Target audience: </strong></strong>Everyone…especially if you teach, speak at conferences, or communicate with the public.</p>

<h2>Ticket Options:</h2><p><strong><strong>Standard </strong></strong>- $300</p><p><strong><strong>Student/AmeriCorps </strong></strong>- $150</p><p><strong><strong>If registering after October 13th</strong></strong><strong><strong>, we will make every effort to provide lunch, but it may not be possible.</strong></strong></p><p><strong><strong>Reduced Pricing: </strong></strong>We have a limited amount of funds available that can reduce the cost of your registration by 30% for those eligible. These dollars are for those with limited resources. If you are interested in applying, please select the "Apply for Reduced Pricing" ticket and we will follow up with you.</p>

<h2>Refund Policy:</h2><p>Cancellations are allowed up to 1-day prior to the start of class, however, refund amounts vary based on when you notify us of your cancellation.</p><ul><li>&gt;14 days prior to event: Full refund, excluding Eventbrite fees</li></ul><ul><li>1-14 days prior to event: 50% refund, excluding Eventbrite fees</li></ul><p><em><em>Please contact bethany.wray@clackamas.edu </em></em><em><em>if the cancellation is due to illness or family emergency. We will work with you on a case by case basis, and may be able to apply your registration fee toward a future workshop.</em></em></p>
