Common Humanity Online Workshop

President Lincoln’s Cottageis an historic site and museum located in the Petworth neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C. President Lincoln’s Cottage first opened to the public in February 2008. It is the only place the public can experience the history of Abraham Lincoln’s public and private life where he lived and worked for over a quarter of his presidency.While in residence at the Cottage, Lincoln visited with wounded soldiers, spent time with self-emancipated men, women and children, and developed the Emancipation Proclamation. The human cost of the Civil War surrounded him, undoubtedly impacted his thinking, and strengthened his resolve to challenge the status quo. Through innovative guided tours, exhibits and programs, we use Lincoln’s example to inspire visitors to take their own path to greatness, and preserve this place as an authentic, tangible connection to the past and a beacon of hope for all who take up Lincoln’s unfinished work.

Join President Lincoln’s Cottage and Laura Banks for an online workshop to explore how cultivating a feeling of connection with others and appreciating the contributions of others to our lives can give us strength, comfort, and courage, especially during these challenging times. We have done hard things as individuals and as a nation, and we can do them together again.<h3>Finding strength and comfort in our common humanity</h3><h3></h3>In ways that just a few short weeks ago we could not have imagined, we have been brought to a poignant awareness of our profound interconnectedness as human beings. While it is natural to feel overwhelmed and isolated in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, embracing our common humanity can give us the courage to be guided by love and wisdom - the “better angels of our nature.” We find that the very things that make us vulnerable are also what make possible our survival and flourishing as individuals, communities, a nation, and the world. Abraham Lincoln modeled this again and again by expanding his understanding and compassion in response to personal and global suffering. In turn, his ability to see and embrace the humanity of all - from friend to slave to enemy - changed him and the world. Program logistics:The day before the program, President Lincoln&#x27;s Cottage will send you an email with a link to join the videoconference via Zoom. Click the link to join the meeting. You may be prompted to download Zoom, which will take just a few moments to complete.You will need a computer with a decent internet connection, equipped with a webcam and a microphone. Most laptops come with a camera and microphone built in. You can test your audio and video settings ahead of time if you would like.About the Facilitator: Laura Banks is honored to be a Certified Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) Instructor, dual-certified by and Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CARE). While raising a family and serving others around the world, she has witnessed how meeting the challenges of life with compassion can greatly reduce suffering and transform the very things people thought would break them into the most resilient and beautiful parts of who they are. This powerful combination of evidence-based training and personal experience shape Laura’s commitment to strengthen her own and others’ capacity to thrive and find meaning throughout life, especially through the cultivation of compassion.
