This year’s UN General Assembly will mark halfway towards the Sustainable Development Goals, and see a strong focus on health, with commitments on Universal Health Coverage, Pandemic Preparedness, Readiness and Response and Tuberculosis. Next year, a High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) presents a further opportunity to secure sustainable health, food and environmental systems, with equitable access to effective treatments.
At present, our unsustainable use of antibiotics is one of the most urgent global issues. Drug-resistant infections kill more than 1.25 million people each year and are the third-leading underlying cause of death globally. There is a disproportionate impact in low-income countries and amongst children. New evidence points to the links between AMR and air pollution, as well as river pollution.
Now is the time to come together to connect, ideate, and mobilize on how we can build on this year’s UNGA and move forward across nations and sectors, coming together to tackle AMR. By doing so, we can save millions of lives, protect our environment, build food security, and safeguard the medical progress of the past hundred years for future generations.

Remarks by Professor Dame Sally Claire Davies, UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance, and Cheryl Moore, Chief Research Programmes Officer at Wellcome, will be given during the reception.
