Combating Hate Crimes Through Education

Manhattan Community Board Sixhas an important New York City Charter mandated advisory role in dealing with land use and zoning matters, city budget, municipal service delivery and many other items relating to the quality of life of those who live, work and visit our district. We represent the area on the east side of Manhattan from 14th to 59th Streets, from the East River to Lexington Avenue, and extending west to Madison Avenue between 34th and 40th Streets.

How do we discuss hate as a community and educate our children? This forum will be building on recently passed NYC legislation to create a Mayoral Office for the Prevention Hate Crimes, and the educational outreach required from this office. The conversation will focus on educational initiatives already in place, and how these might work within this new office.
Including a panel discussion on how education can be used to combat hate crimes. The panel will be moderated by New York City Council Member Mark Levine. Panelists include: Michael Cohen from the Simon Wiesenthal Center; Franck D. Joseph, Assistant Commissioner for Community Relations at the NYC Commission on Human Rights; Audacia Ray, Director of Community Organizing and Public Advocacy, NYC Anti-Violence Project; Calee Prindle, Assistant Principal at the Facing History School; and Angela Fernandez, Acting Commissioner of the NYS Division of Human Rights.
