Columnstore Indexes - starting with SQL Server 2012 the revolutionary technology of Columnstore Indexes started to appear across all versions (the regular Enterprise Edition and Parallel Data Warehouse). Step by step you will learn the most detailed differences in the architectures as well as the usage cases and troubleshooting for the reporting and analytics. Diving into the storage internals and compression methods, we shall review all possible options and t-sql commands to take control and enable the full speed of the columnstore indexes.

With practical examples of data loading optimisations, we shall take a detailed look into the transaction log behaviour and the reasons for it. With the help of the different DMV's and Extended Events we go to identify the problems with Columnstore Indexes and apply available solutions. 

We´ll  focus a significant part of the Columnstore Indexes learnings on the SQL Server 2016, but we shall be using Azure SQLDatabase very extensively, since the Columnstore Indexes are not only up to date, but they are be even in front of the most recent on-premises release, including Operational Analytics and Memory-Optimised Operational Analytics.

The Batch execution mode and its details will be another important aspect of the Columnstore part of the workshop.

Memory Optimised Tables - starting with SQL Server 2014 the revolutionary technology of memory-optimised tables helped the OLTP workloads and some processes within Data Warehousing to reach brand new level of performance.

With SQL Server 2016 already released and having Memory Optimised Tables in Azure SQLDatabase in preview, this workshop will focus on the internal structures of the indexes, advantages & limitations as well as the solutions for the limitations of the available versions.

Using the DMV's and Extended Events, we shall show how to automate the current problems determination, such as wrong bucket numbers or inefficient scanning strategies because of the wrong index type selection. The file system maintenance is another important aspect that will be part of our workshop. 
 

In this 3-day workshop, you will spend one day on the Columnstore Indexes internals, one day on the Memory-Optimised Tables internals and one day on the practical solutions involving both technologies.
