From Williamsburg, take the Colonial Parkway east towards Yorktown. Exit Hubbard Lane/ W. Queens Drive, making a right turn onto Hubbard Lane/ W Queens Drive. Travel 0.2 miles, then turn right onto Lakeshead Drive

What should I bring with me?

Lots of water, sunscreen, a hat, comfortable shoes, snacks or lunch (depending on how long you want to stay), binoculars – if you have them, an interest in the natural world and a desire to learn

What do I wear?

It's likely to be hot, so wear comfortable clothing that will keep you cool. Depending on what activities you do, you may get your clothing dirty, so consider that when choosing them. We also suggest a hat with a brim to protect your face from the sun.

Do I have to have the iNaturalist app on my phone?

Accepted Answer

You should have an account, otherwise your observations won't be included in the data. Using the app is easy (we can help you set it up if needed) but technically you don't need to have it. The alternative is to take photographs and then upload them to the iNat project using your computer.

Who should attend?

Everyone! It will be fun for children - to learn about all of the different organisms in the park. It will be just as fun for adults too. Even seasoned naturalists will enjoy the park and will appreciate the opportunity to be citizen scientists documenting the area's biodiversity.

Can children attend?

Absolutely, children are encouraged to attend! We love teaching children about the beautiful flora and fauna we have right here in the Colonial District. 
**Please note that all children under 18 are required to have supervision, as it will not be provided by park staff or event volunteers.

Should I attend if I don't know anything about nature?

YES! We will have so many people ready to help you learn as much information as you want about the flora and fauna present at the park. We love teaching people about nature!

Question 8

Can I catch stuff myself?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, no - the park has guidelines against handling the flora and fauna. The expert volunteers have received special permission to catch and handle organisms in which they specialize, so you will see far more than you could see if you visited the park alone.
