Detroit is Different's Inaugural Collard Green Cook-Off

The Inaugural Collard Green Cook-Off is here, and Detroit is Different’s a Lot of Studio is hosting the grand event. This exciting competition brings together urban farmers throughout Detroit to showcase their culinary skills and gardening talents. A group of Detroit farmers compete for the title of the Inaugural Collard Green Cook-Off Champion! The cook-off will take place on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at the Detroit is Different Garden (1634 Clements Detroit MI 48238).The Cook-off will be the final presentation for Detroit is Different’s a Lot of Studio Podcast &amp; Performance Summer Series. Queen of Blues Thornetta Davis &amp; Luther ‘Bad Man’ Keith performs live. The Detroit Black Land Farmers Fund will be present and podcasting to share information about farming, gardening, and growing food for yourself and your family in Detroit. "This event is going to be a shining example of what community, creativity, culture, and fun is for Legacy Detroiters,” said Khary Frazier founder of Detroit is Different. "This competition not only celebrates the cultural culinary diversity of collard greens, but also promotes healthy eating and encourages people to explore new ways of cooking and enjoying this delicious and nutritious vegetable.""We are proud to support this event and encourage everyone to come out and experience the culinary creativity &amp; Detroit community," said Regina Ann-Campbell President &amp; CEO of Build Institute, the offical sponsor for the event. "Collard greens are a staple in Southern cuisine, but they are also a versatile and healthy ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes."Build Institute empowers people to launch ideas and grow businesses. With a primary focus on Blacks, Latinx, under-represented, and under-resourced community businesses.The competition will feature a panel of expert judges, who will evaluate the collards based on taste, texture, presentation, creativity, and use of local or seasonal ingredients. Winners will be awarded gift cards and cooking equipment. Judges will be Comedian Coco, Quiana "Que" Broden from Cooking with Que, Tepfirah Haanah Rushdan of Keep Growing Detroit, and Brittany March of itsFoodDetroit. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
