Dive into the creation and history of collage in this three week series. We’ll be going back in time, from present day figurative collage to the beginning of western collage and the avant-garde of the early 20th Century. Each week we’ll highlight a specific technique for creating and inspiration for our subject matter.Materials provided. Sliding scale prices. Discounted price available when you sign up for the series.

Weekly Descriptions

Week 1. To start off the series we’ll explore how collage is used and inspires contemporary art. We’ll take cues from Mickalene Thomas and create our own collage portraits.

Week 2. In our second week we’ll integrate the technique of déchirage (loosely translated as “tearing”). The collage paintings of Lee Krasner will serve as inspiration.

Week 3. To wrap up the series we’ll go back to the beginning of western collage where intuition ruled the creative process. We’ll take inspiration from Sonia Delaunay and her current exhibition at Bard Graduate Center.
