About this event

This is an evening and one day workshop which has a minimum of 10 hours contact time.

The course run across 2 sessions - Participants must be able to attend BOTH sessions:

Session 1 - Friday 21st June 2024 - 18:00 - 21:00

Session 2 - Sunday 23rd June 2024 09:00 - 17:00

The course is designed to be as practical as possible and provide participants with realistic scenarios to equip them with the skills to effectively cope in an emergency situation.

The main components of the syllabus are;

· The health benefits of cold-water swimming

· The physiological response of the body to immersion in cold water and the effects of cold-water shock.

· The factors that contribute to swim failure, the 1:10:1 rule and how to use float to live strategies.

· Beach morphodynamics, water hazards and risk assessment of a cold -water swimming venue.

· Hierarchy of rescue in a water environment and emergency services call out procedure.

· Use of throwlines and water extrication devices to remove a casualty safely from the water.

· Have an understanding of immersion hypothermia, hydrostatic squeeze, circum rescue collapse and the recognition and effects of afterdrop.

· Cardiac arrest in cold water, drowning and CPR protocol.

· Use of a CPR facemask and defibrillator.

· Scenario based training.

· Good practice techniques in cold-water swimming groups.

The Qualification

· The Cold-Water Swimming Course is certified by Rescue Emergency Care as a CPR / AED First Aid Course for three years and is assessed by continuous assessment.
