Tell your story through Coding, Music, Art and Dance through a 4-week workshop where kids will learn Coding and AI with Choreography & Beats

Detroit has always been a global force for innovation from Motown’s worldwide cultural influence to its groundbreaking legacy in Engineering and manufacturing. Through creativity, music, and building , Detroit shaped industries and inspired generations.

Today, Coding with Culture reconnects young people to that legacy by showing how creativity can power success in the digital economy through STEAM, Music and choreography.

This unique 4-week workshop takes the intimidation away from learning new skills like coding and AI prompts to an engaging, culturally relevant experience by connecting:

• Beat making, Music and choreography to coding fundamentals

• Art, storytelling, animation, and AI tools to digital creation

• Creative expression to real-world technology career pathways

Participants will discover how their passions in dance, music, and art are transferable to careers in STEAM and can evolve into skills for the future positioning them as the next generation of innovators, creators, and tech leaders.

Now it can build global opportunities through technology.

Program Details:

• Hosted by: Bailey Park NDC

• Curriculum by: Developers of Detroit (DoD) & Black Girls Do Science (BGDS)

• Participants: 10 students per session 

• Duration: 4 weeks

• Schedule: Saturdays | 2-3 hours each week

• Location: The Hub

May 16: Program Overview + Coding Workshop: “Code, Move, Create”

Black Girls Do Science

During this first session, students will get an overview of the full program and what they’ll be learning throughout the workshop series. Black Girls Dp Science will lead the program where participants will be introduced to coding through an engaging, beginner-friendly experience using Code.org, where they’ll explore the basics of programming by combining music, dance, and technology. Workshop Highlights: • Full program introduction and expectations • Career Journey of our Instructor-a Software Engineer • Icebreaker activity: Cha Cha Slide Intro • Live Code.org demonstration • Hands-on coding session where students program their own digital dancers • Creative sharing session where participants present their coded dance creations to the class This session is designed to make coding approachable, interactive, and fun while building confidence in creativity, problem-solving, and digital literacy.

May 23 – Music Production, Beatmaking & Storytelling with Vitolays

Developers of Detroit

Step into the world of music creation with Detroit artist, producer, engineer, and storyteller Vitolays, a native of Detroit’s historic 7 Mile Road. This immersive workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of music production, beatmaking, and creative storytelling while learning directly from a real industry professional. Participants will explore how beats are made, how artists develop their sound, and how storytelling shapes powerful music. Workshop Highlights: • Introduction to music production and beatmaking • Storytelling through lyrics and sound • Behind-the-scenes insights from a working artist • Studio session experience • Creative inspiration from Detroit’s music culture Whether students are interested in producing, writing, or performing, this session offers an authentic introduction to the music industry and creative self-expression.

May 30 – Coding Fundamentals with Victoria an IOS Developer

Developers of Detroit

Build a strong foundation in coding through interactive lessons designed for beginners. This workshop focuses on core coding principles that help students develop logical thinking, problem-solving, and technical confidence. Participants will gain hands-on experience while learning the building blocks of programming in a supportive and engaging environment. Workshop Highlights: • Introduction to coding logic • Basic programming concepts • Interactive projects and challenges • Problem-solving activities • Building confidence in digital skills Perfect for beginners looking to strengthen their technical abilities while preparing for more advanced creative tech projects.
