Code Studio Camp (Spring Break)

GRADES 3-6 // Spend your spring break exploring Computer Science coding in a fun set of activities from Code Studio. Learning even the basics of coding will help students in virtually any career—from architecture to zoology. Code Studio is part of Code.org, a national nonprofit expanding access to computer science. 
ABOUT THE TEACHER  |  DIANA HIATT has been teaching Hour of Code and Code Studio for students in grades 1-4 since December 2014. She is a software engineer and math educator committed to promoting Computer Science learning in early grades.

Do I have to register to come?
Yes, you MUST register to come as playshops have a limited number of spots.   
How do I register my child? Do I have to register to come?
Register via our <A HREF="http://www.eventbrite.com/o/spark-center-8173311472" TARGET="_blank">Eventbrite</A> page (if you're reading this, then you're in the right spot), then print and fill out our <A TITLE="Student Permission/Release Form" HREF="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/55240ca5e4b0ef65b027bcb8/t/5579f3cee4b007f8f69deb4e/1434055630998/Child+Permission+Form-Spark.pdf" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Student Permission/Release Form</A>, which is REQUIRED. If you do not have a printer, we will have forms at the event that you will need to fill out before leaving your child with us.  
What do I need to bring to this playshop?

My child can only come to some of the sessions of this playshop. Should I still register them?
We ask that you only register your child if they can attend the entire time and all sessions of the playshop. There are two reasons for this. First, spots in playshops are limited, and we want to give those spots with students who are committed to attending all sessions of the playshop for which they register. Secondly, mutli-session playshops have learning activities that build upon one other, and children can feel left-behind and frustrated if they miss part of a session. We have many great playshops and activities for youth, so if you cannot make all sessions of this playshop, please wait and register for another opportunities.
If your child becomes ill unexpectedly after registering or has to miss a playshop session due to an emergency, please contact brooke@sparkwestcentral.org.  
As a parent, can I stay at this playshop with my child?
Because parents are often distracting to students during learning time, we prefer you help your child get settled and then leave your child with our well-trained staff and volunteers. Our release/permission form has your contact information and we will contact you if there is a problem of any kind. Kendall Yards has many great shops and restaurants where you can hang out if you wish to stay close. When you pick up your child at the end-time, your son/daughter will show you the fabulous things they have created!
If you want to participate in the playshop with your child, we suggest you <A TITLE="Volunteer" HREF="http://www.sparkwestcentral.org/volunteers/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">sign up as a volunteer</A> via our website. After registering, you will be invited to a volunteer orientation and training. This process can take a few weeks, so plan accordingly.
 Can I sign up my child for a playshop if they don't want to come?
No. Spark Center playshops have two rules: (1) Everyone wants to be here; (2) Everyone is compassionate to others. Playshops are NOT a spot to drop off a child who does not want to participate. If a child is disrespectful, defiant, or harmful to others, you will be called to pick up your child.  
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is free 2-hour parking behind the Spark Center in Kendall Yards. Free 90-minute street parking is also available. There is also a city bus stop available at the intersection of Summit and Monroe.

Launched in 2013, Code.org® is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color.
