Communities In Schools of Durham is the local affiliate of the nation's largest dropout prevention network. Our mission is a bold one: Surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Since 1993, CIS of Durham has championed evidence-based programs to do just that, ensuring our community's youth have every chance to accomplish their dreams.

Join Communities In Schools of Durham for an exclusive evening with Coach Steve Wilks.  
North Carolina­ native Steve Wilks knows what it takes to mold and grow a young person’s potential and dreams into a game-winning reality.  
A star player himself,  Wilks finished his career at Appalachian State as defensive back with 103 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 4 blocked kicks.  He rose quickly through the coaching ranks, working with the Chicago Bears, San Diego Chargers, and landing back home with the Carolina Panthers in 2012.  Wilks was promoted to assistant head coach in 2015 and the following year led the Panthers to their first Super Bowl appearance since 2004. 
His philosophy as a coach reflects his own journey overcoming challenges and rising to the top of his profession—connecting him to the mission of Communities In Schools and our team of Graduation and Success Coaches, who help Durham’s youth reach their potential.
