To that end, we’ve asked some of the most creative science fiction writers to paint portraits of life after technological and cultural shifts have actually mitigated climate change—and we’ve adapted to chronic environmental stresses. Think of it as climate reporting from the future.So, join us for an unforgettable evening of live journalism, science and technology, fiction and nonfiction, video, art, and music. Featured Programming:* One story drawn from Kim Stanley Robinson’s latest book, “Ministry of the Future,” a NSF research team in the year 2040 embarks on an audacious scheme to put the brakes on sea-level rise by drilling holes deep into the Antarctic Ice Sheet to pin it to the bedrock.* A veteran journalist from Mark Alpert’s story “Dodging the Apocalypse” investigates the richest man on Earth’s moonshot idea to solve the energy crisis by putting solar panels in space. What he finds is a much more complicated story. * A review of San Francisco 150 years in the future, written by Eliot Peper in his piece “Victory Condition,” describes how the city has been rebuilt into a single massive arcology surrounded by re-wildlands. The Golden Gate Bridge still stands—one of the few historical artifacts outside the city’s gleaming walls. But it is primarily a wildlife crossing for wolves, jaguars, coyotes, and elk.*The night’s MC is Amanda Font of KQED. She is a producer on the Bay Curious podcast, and the host and co-producer of the series Audible Cosmos. She previously worked as director of The California Report Magazine. + + + The evening wraps up with a reality check conversation we’re calling, “The Science Behind the Fiction.” Series editor W. Wayt Gibbs moderates a discussion with Ken Caldeira (senior scientist at the Carnegie Institution), Kelly Wanser (Executive Director, SilverLining), and Mark Alpert (journalist and novelist) about the state of the science in the stories, technological feasibility, political and economic hurdles, and more.What could possibly go right? _____________Climate Parables is made possible with funding support of the V.
