CLIMATE CRISIS: Implementing Solutions

The main objective of this workshop is to describe the content of a freshman-level course on combating climate change (z.umn.edu/ee1701) and associated laboratory course EE1703 at the University of Minnesota, to promote them in high schools through our College in the Schools (CIS) dual-credit program.
EE1701 has burgeoning enrollment as students realize that our use of fossil fuels is causing rapid changes in the climate, with consequences that are unimaginable.  Beyond convincing students the cause and consequences of our changing climate, this call-to-action course provides them hope and the fundamental knowledge as a tool for enormous opportunities that lie ahead in selecting career pathways leading to meaningful jobs.
 This workshop has the following agenda:
8:00 am                   Registration and breakfast
8:30 am                   Welcome by Dean Mostafa Kaveh
8:45 am - 9:30am    Climate Observation and Model-Based Prediction by Dr. Gavin Schmidt, Director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies [Video presentation]
30-minute coffee/networking break
10:00 – 11:00    Description of the Content of the freshman-level course (z.umn.edu/ee1701) on             Combating Climate Change by Prof. Ned Mohan
11:00 – 11:30    Teacher Qualifications for offering this dual-credit, concurrent enrollment course through The College in the Schools program by Prof. Bill Robbins and Julie Williams
11:30 – 12:00    Demo of the low-cost laboratory experiments [EE1703] developed to complement the                            lecture course
12:00 – 1:00      Lunch and networking
Optional:
1:00 – 3:00        Hands-on experience on 5 laboratory set-ups of each experiment in groups of 2; each                          for 30 minutes
The participants will get a certificate for 0.6 Continuing Education Units (0.6 CEUs).
NOTE: To high school teachers and administrators traveling from outside the metro area [approximately greater than 50 miles], we will reimburse up to $150.00 for travel expenses [including one night of lodging] with proper justifications and receipts. This is for the first 50 participants to register for this workshop.
