Resilience - How do we Communicate when our Internet and Mobile Phones Stop Working?

Clynfyw CBS is running a series of Climate Conversations throughout 2026 in order to help our West Wales/Lower Teifi Valley community get a better understanding of, and become better prepared for, the challenge of climate breakdown, societal collapse and the poly-crises we face in the coming years.Our next Climate Conversation will be on Tuesday 11th August and is titled: Resilience - How do we Communicate when our Internet and Mobile Phones Stop Working?Whatever the cause, climate, cyber-security, or something else entirely, the internet and mobile phones are key parts of our lives. How will you know your family are OK without your phone? How will you contact your friends, workplace and colleagues? There will be no on-line banking, no access to cash, no food sales, no fuel....The Primary Speaker is, Cilgerran-based Andy Digby, the Radio Society of Great Britain's District 71 Representative and point of contact within Pembrokeshire for the UK Government 'Resilience Direct Unit'. He is also the controller for the Pembrokeshire Raynet service. Although we will only scratch the surface of the methodolgies available to provide continuing communications in the event of a total communications blackout, this conversation could prove a element in starting to build a local (feeding into national) network of communication in a time of crisis.Will this happen here? It happened in Spain and parts of France and Portugal last year without any warning and it also happened in the Eastern seaboard of the USA a few years ago. The UN reports over 300 cases of government-enforced internet shutdowns in 54 countries over the last two years(1) The likelihood of the same sort of thing happening here in the UK is getting higher, and with it will go all 'normal' civilian communications (phone, internet, TV and broadcast radio). Our systems are so fragile.The local councils all have Emergency Planning Officers (EPO's) which, amongst many other scenarios, takes account of climate change triggered incidents, but what systems do our local government have in place for this eventuality...and why don't we already know about them?This talk is designed to share sometimes complex information and opportunities in an accessible way so it can be passed on to other people.
