The Cuban Research Institute is pleased to announce the 12th installment of its Classically Cuban concert series. The concert will be devoted to romantic piano compositions and lyric music from Cuba from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including well-known titles by Ernesto Lecuona and Jorge Anckermann. The event will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center on the FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
The concert will feature José Ruiz Elcoro, Héctor Polanco, and, as a special guest, Eglise Gutiérrez. Mr. Ruiz Elcoro is a Cuban pianist and musicologist, specializing in Iberoamerican music. He is currently a pianist for the Miami City Ballet. He earned his B.A. in Philology at the University of Havana and graduated from the Ignacio Cervantes Conservatory in Havana. As a piano performer and lecturer, he has appeared in numerous stages and universities in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. He has also published essays on Ernesto Lecuona, Ignacio Cervantes, the Cuban zarzuela, and other aspects of Cuban musicology. He has taught at several conservatories and schools, and has collaborated with the Fundación Musicalia de Puerto Rico. Since 2008, he resides in the United States, where he is a professor at the Kingdom Kids school.
Percussionist Héctor Polanco was born in Camajuaní, Cuba. He completed his musical studies at the Provincial Musical Center of Santa Clara. He cultivates several percussion instruments, including the timbales. In Cuba he performed with numerous musical groups. Once in the United States, he has formed part of several popular music bands and has performed in various musical stages, sometimes accompanying renowned figures of Ibero-American popular music. He is a veterinarian physician and lives in Miami.
Born in Holguín, Cuba, soprano Eglise Gutiérrez has sung in some of the most prestigious venues of the world. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, during the 2009–2010 season as Linda di Chamonix. She made her Berlin Deutsche Oper Debut as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor. Ms. Gutiérrez has also appeared in concert in Prague, Cannes, Helsinki, and Miami, and in a U.S. tour with Andrea Bocelli. A three-time recipient of the Gerda Lissner Foundation Grant and grant recipient of the Singers Development Foundation, Ms. Gutiérrez has earned top prizes, including first prize in the International Mirjam Helin Competition in Helsinki and the Giargirai Bel Canto Opera Competition. Ms. Gutiérrez graduated (Summa Cum Laude) from the Higher Institute of Art in Havana and from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.
We are providing special seats for those with walking disabilities among our attendees. Keep in mind that if you select a handicapped ticket(s), you will NOT be allowed to sit with your family member due to the limited nature of the seats available. Furthermore, you will NOT be permitted to sit in the handicapped section if you do not have a walking disability and we might have trouble finding you a seat after you have purchased a ticket for the wrong section if the Concert Hall is full.

Each ticket type will be verified (i.e. If you are a student, you will need to show your student ID at the entrance on the day of the concert. The same applies to FIU Faculty, Staff, and Alumni).
