About this event

  • 3 hours

Maid is the story of Alex, a young woman who–with her two-year-old daughter, Maddie–leaves an abusive relationship in the middle of the night, only to then have to navigate government red tape, her own family, and the legal world to survive. Alex has nowhere to go, no job, $18 to her name, and a gas tank running on empty.

This is a scenario domestic violence advocates are deeply familiar with. Maid tells a story of violence, resilience, and growth that resonates with a tremendous range of audiences, from those who have been in Alex’s shoes to advocates and caseworkers and mental health professionals and people who have known someone like Alex. After the audience has viewed the first 2 episodes, our panel will discuss the dynamics and issues faced in the series. The panel will be addressing topics that frequently come up after viewings, such as the difficulty of obtaining government assistance, the obstacles to leaving abusive relationships, legal barriers survivors face, the cycle of violence, local services and how to get help.

The panel discussion will include representatives from SACIS, HOPE of East Central Illinois, the 5th Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council
