Civic Tech: Tulsa

The community of developers that makes up Code for Tulsa has been building civic apps since 2011.  We’re programmers, graphic designers, PR/Marketing professionals, and all of us have a huge heart for making Tulsa a better place to live, work, and play.  We’ve worked with Tulsa Transit, the Tulsa Fire Department, the Tulsa Library, the local food bank, the regional planning authority, and FEMA.

<H2>Projects</H2>
We'll be working on two main projects:
1) Crow Creek Community—Water Quality testing. We have once again invited <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.bluethumbok.com/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Blue Thumb OK</A> to work with us. At CodeAcross this past Feb., we took a field trip with Cheryl Cheadle to Crow Creek, and learned how to test the creek's water for pollutants (fertilizers, pesticides, etc). Now we'll be taking those tools and creating a web app that any citizen with a water testing kit, can use to report their findings online.
2) Tulsa County Health Dept.—Home Inspections. THD inspects homes to ensure and enforce certain minimum building standards that must be in place if the structure is occupied or used. These standards include requirements pertaining to sanitation, maintenance, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems, and more. Currently home inspection forms and results, are not in a digital format. This project aims to give <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.tulsa-health.org/environmental-health/housing-inspections" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tulsa County Health Dept.</A> inspectors a digital form by which to report their findings, and ultimately a way for the collected data to be shared with local health providers.
In addition, we're looking for more ideas and data feeds that can be added to <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="https://www.citygram.org/tulsa" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CityGram Tulsa</A>.
...and if you want MORE projects to work on, check out the <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="https://www.codeforamerica.org/events/national-day-2016" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">National Day of Civic Hacking Challenges</A>. These challenges are related to getting a better idea of what digital government services are like and how they differ across the country.

But that's not all!
This year we are very excited to partner with the <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://oklahomainnovationinstitute.org/" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Oklahoma Innovation Institute</A>. They will be presenting a short series of talks, from 9:30am to 11:30am.

3. Tulsa County Health: Connecting THD with Health Providers
4. A Regional Data Portal for Tulsa
Whether you're part of a government organization, or working with a local nonprofit, or a developer looking to get more of a, "big picture" view, this series of talks is a chance to understand the state of civic technology in the Tulsa region, find out what is on the horizon, and how you can get involved.
The event is free and open to the public. Coffee, and lunch will be provided.

FAQs
Who should attend?  Do I have to be a programmer in order to attend?
Urbanists, civic techies, government staff and elected leaders, developers, designers, community organizers, and anyone with the passion to make Tulsa better, are all welcome.  The civic technology movement will need people of all skill levels and all types of talents.
 
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
On-street parking is free on Saturdays and abundantly available.
 
Does the event start at 9:00 or 9:30?
36°N will open at 9am, and coffee / light breakfast items will be available at that time for anyone who wants to dive right in to working on projects.  Our speaker series will begine at 9:30am.
 
What if I just want to come hear the talks?
Feel free to arrive at 9:30, and leave at 11:30.  However we do encourage you to stick around for lunch, and check out what projects the groups are working on.  

What if I just want to work on projects?
We'll have space, wifi, and plenty of coffee ready for you to work straight through from 9am to 4pm.  However we do encourage you to listen to a talk that you might be interested in.  Take a break and join us for lunch!
