Chicken Processing Workshop

Blue Whistler Farm is set up to help people engage and appreciate the holistic cycle that supports the food that we eat. With the larger animals mowing, the smaller animals scratching and spreading, and the meat and dairy they provide in the end, you will find a cycle and purpose behind every animal’s created nature. On our farm we are growing vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, and honey to provide a rich diet for our family and our community. From that harvest, we also choose to provide a limited supply to the public for their benefit and to contribute to the sustainability of the farm.We are growing as organically as possible, as the demand grows we will grow. We are currently are able to bring a variety of meats to the community- Grass-fed Lamb, Pasture-Finished Rabbit, Pastured Poultry, Pastured Eggs, Pasture raised Turkey, and Pasture/Woodlot raised Pork, and will have Raw Honey available here soon!Our meats are flavorful, healthy, and nutrient-dense, which is a standard that is met by managing and caring for our animals from the very beginning of their lives all the way to harvest. The intentionality and design that goes into each component of the animal’s life all contribute to not just a happy animal, but a thriving animal. Our animals live in the kinds of environments that they were created to live in without receiving any additives, antibiotics, or growth hormones.Our Chickens wake up to fields filled with sunshine, fresh green grass, and bugs. We only feed grass and hay to our  Ruminents, who are on a rotation in the fields to help bring nutrients to the soil, and to give them a longer grazing period. We do not add any grain, soy, or corn to their diets. Our Rabbits are finished on grass to create a beautifully dressed, healthy low cholesterol meat. Our Pigs have a rich environment filled with grass, deep wallows, thick woods, and plenty of room to run and root around. Our egg layers roam the fields all day chasing bugs, scratching around, and taking dust baths in the sun.We want you to be connected to your food, to see how it is raised, to know why it's raised this way, and to taste the difference! We've been asked many times "when will you host a Chicken Processing Workshop?!" Well folks, heres your chance! 
We will be hosting an on farm Chicken Processing Workshop here at Blue Whistler Farm on Saturday August 13th from 2p-5p. 
Each workshop attendant will get to process a couple birds each, with help and guidance of farmers Amy and Josh, and then will get to take home one of the birds they processed.
The day will start with a quick tour of our broiler operation, and then will head into processing.
At the workshop, we will go over how to kill the birds in a quick and humane way, and then will go through the steps of scalding, plucking, eviceration, and bagging with each student.  
This is a great way to get closer to your food, and your farmers. It will help you understand all that goes into creating the food that ends up on your table.
Please come wearing clothes that can get dirty, rubber boots, bring a cooler for your chicken, and a water bottle. 
The class will begin at 2:00, so please arrive at the farm by 1:45 at latest.
