The Public Education Foundation and Hamilton County Schools are hosting the 5th annual Chattanooga FAB Institute, June 7 - 9, 2023 in Chattanooga, TN, in partnership with Volkswagen Group of America. This unique professional development is designed to give K-12 educators one-of-a-kind experiences as they engage in hands-on learning with digital fabrication tools in our high-tech makerspaces, Volkswagen eLabs!

Back for 2024, attendees can choose to register for up to two pre-conference workshops on July 9, 2024. These workshops will provide introductory instructions on how to use the tools that are found in the VW eLabs. During registration, please select the workshop(s) you would like to attend during checkout. Each pre-conference workshop will last 3 hours and will provide introductory lessons on the equipment and software used during the Fab Institute. Registration includes access to 2 workshops (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) as well as lunch during the day. Please bring a laptop or Chromebook with you to pre-conference sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need specific software on my computer in order to attend?

No. We will either used web-based software (like TinkerCad) or we will help you get any software you need when you arrive.

What should I wear?

This is a hands-on learning environment in a fully functional fabrication lab. Please dress in casual, comfortable clothes. For safety, please do not wear open-toed shoes, and please secure any loose or dangling jewelry or hair.

I have never used any of these tools. Will I be able to still participate?

YES! This is the whole point of the pre-conference workshop. We will start with the VERY basics for each tool so you can feel more confident during the Chattanooga Fab Institute.

What will I do in the workshops?

Our VW eLab teachers will facilitate each workshop. The sessions have been strategically designed to introduce educators to digital fabrication tools, software, and techniques through a gradual release process. You won't listen to long lectures. You'll learn through guided practice!
