Changing the landscape: A dialogue with journalists reporting on sexual violence

Raliance, in partnership with The Poynter Institute, will bring together journalists for a one-day symposium designed to advance news coverage on sexual assault.Sexual violence is a complex topic for journalists to cover and can be even more difficult for the general public to understand. The goals of the event are to connect  journalists, identify best practices and challenges in reporting on this topic, and advance the dialogue in the journalism field.

Part 1: The state of reporting on sexual assault

The summit will begin with a presentation of research findings by the Berkley Media Studies Group and panel discussion including the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and Poynter Institute.

Part 2: Highlighting Exceptional Journalism to End Sexual Violence

This session will highlight winners from the inaugural RALLYs awards hosted by Raliance, The RALLYs honor the highest level of journalistic achievement in covering sexual violence.

Part 3: Making the pivot

This session will feature accomplished journalists engaging the audience on how to move reporting practices forward.

Part 4: Think tank on moving forward

Small group discussions will focus on what stories need to be told next and what tools are required to move forward. The day will end with  a group discussion on steps participants can take toward making these changes happen in their newsroom.

Please note that the primary audience for this event is newsroom journalists and news media who are embedded in the daily dynamics of news production.
