A conference for student-teachers and teachers of RE. Run by REToday in partnership with Stranmillis UC, QUB and St Mary's UC.

This is a unique event where student teachers and RE teachers from across Northern Ireland can meet and learn together. The purpose of the day will be for participants to develop and enhance their professional skills in teaching religious education. This one-day event is provided specifically by REToday Services and co-hosted by three Higher Education Institutions: Stranmillis University College, the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Belfast and St Mary's University College. The training will be provided by Lat Blaylock. Lat is editor of RE Today Magazine and has written many resources published by RE Today, including Picturing Easter, Tackling Tough Questions, Picturing Jesus and Spiritual Engagement, a folder of ideas for 16-19 RE days. He taught RE, Humanities and PSHE in Leicester for 11 years.

Agenda

To be a teacher of religion and worldviews in UK classrooms is  challenging stuff. Teachers who enthuse their students with creativity, critical thinking and deepening knowledge are doing a tough job well. And the challenges of social harmony between different groups in our culture are also in focus here. This day conference will provide 15 ready to use ideas for new and serving teachers that illustrate how to face the challenges with vigour, rigour and imagination.

The Challenges of RE

Students love it when their RE engages their creative thinking. Religions at their most creative produce extraordinary architecture, poetry, art, literature of music. 5 ways of making these connections happen will be provided

The Challenges of Creativity

Students from non-religious perspectives and many faiths need dialogue with each other. 5 examples of dialogic RE for deep learning from atheism and four different religions.

The Challenges of Plurality and Diversity

Ways of knowing: Theology, philosophy, textual study and social sciences all have a place in the RE/RVE /RME classroom. 5 examples to show how and why this makes great learning
